Celebrating Banquet for Three Anniversaries

Sponsored by Canada China Chamber of Commerce and Industry Association and Canada International Culture Exchange Foundation, Celebrating Banquet for the 145 Anniversary of Canada Day, the 65th Anniversary of the abolition of Discriminatory Chinese Immigration Act,the 55th Anniversary of the first Chinese-Canadian Zheng Tianhua being elected to the House of Commons was held in Vancouver Chinatown on the evening of June 29, 2012, Over 30 dignitaries were present there including Alice Wong, Canada’s Federal Minister of State for the Elderly Minister , Liu Fei, the Chinese Consul General in Vancouver, to commemorate the contributions made by the different eras of Chinese to Canada on the eve of Canada Day.

David Teng , Chairman of CCCICA,pointed out that it had been of great significance for the dinner coinciding with Canada’s 145th the founding anniversary of Canada and the 65th anniversary of the Parliament repealing the discriminatory Chinese Immigration Act, which happened to be 55th Anniversary of the first Chinese members of Congress Zheng Tianhua joining Congress .

He hoped by celebrating and commemorating these events , newcomers were able to catch a glimpse of the various contributions made by by the different eras of the Chinese Canadian society,and would keep on inheriting their spirits of being devoted to the society with their expertise.

Member of Parliament Alice Wong said, whether the construction of railways laborers, the Chinese Canadian soldiers in the battlefield of the Second World War, or the first Chinese member Zheng Tianhua entering Congress 55 years ago, had been typical examples Chinese Canadians striving for the social status and respect of the local society since centuries ago.

Liu Fei sang highly of the merits and efforts made by Chinese Canadians at different historical periods to benefit Canadian society as a whole. For instance, she referred to the new generation of Chinese dedicated to promote the development of Sino-Canadian relations in economy and trade through concrete actions indicating a thriving contribution to Canada.Dr. Paul Crowe, director of Center for Lin Siqi International Exchange,the Simon Fraser University (SFU),was also invited to deliver a speech regarding the historical significance of set-up as well as the abolition of the discriminatory Chinese Immigration Act.

At last , all attendants agreed to pay tribute to those Chinese winning the Order of Canada, participating in World War II. Deep respect has showed when veterans were donned scarves by guests.
